HENGE
"Rude bass, heavy drums and spaced-out synthesisers - these are the characteristic sounds of cosmic dross; a form of music indigenous to the planet Xylanthia (located in the Sirius Star System) and brought to Earth for the first time by Henge. In their unique take on this obscure art-form Henge explore astral and existential themes in an almost human-like manner. Playing electronic instruments live and without the aid of computers, their music takes on the form of quirky songs that encourage the listener to consider the immensity of the Universe and ultimately cherish the sacred soil of planet Earth." - review taken from SpaceTimeOut
TIPPING POINT
Whilst touring and recording extensively with the Mercury, MOBO and Jazz FM nominated Roller Trio, saxophonist James Mainwaring has been writing and rehearsing his new project Tipping Point. With an ongoing interest in collaboration, he formed this monster line-up to explore his complex, melodic and experimental compositions, unleashing it onto the UK scene with the Emerging Excellence Award and support from Jazz Services Recording.
With improvised music legend Matthew Bourne (Fender Rhodes) and some of the UK’s most individual instrumentalists; Michael Bardon (double bass) and Joost Hendrickx (drums), the compositions naturally become launch pads for telepathic improvisations that move through playful melodies, reflective ambience and intense aggression.
Members of the band have previously collaborated on projects such as; Dave Kane’s Rabbit Project, Stoop Quintet, Tokyo Doorbells, the Fusebox Orchestra, Shatners Bassoon and Mainwaring/Bardon/Horne amongst many others. It was whilst studying at Leeds College of Music when Mainwaring, Bardon and Hendrickx met and were tutored by Bourne, a pianist whose innovative approach to improvisation and teaching proved to be a great influence on them as well as Leeds’ unique, forward-thinking scene as a whole.
Toying with language internalised from a vast range of music such as jazz, contemporary classical and north Indian classical, Tipping Point aims to evoke playfulness, mindfulness, darkness and the extremes of emotion that fester in the corners of a mind held hostage in a stagnant society, inviting the listener on a journey that confronts their inner demons.
RORY CHARLES
Rory Charles is a Manchester based musician. Known to many as the wild eyed front man of local psychedelic synth pop group The Age Of Glass, but possibly to a few more as the "Ginger Bearded Busker of St Ann's square who sings like a girl" (Dave:- The Big Issue, [salesman]).
Having spent a couple of years cemented to a particular war memorial, come rain, come snow, Rory had time to develop his style.. (Deep breath) ...a delightfully submerging combination of hypnotic fingerpicking and soulful dynamic vocal acrobatics. Rory often trapezes the upper echelons of the male vocal range with all the agility of an ill mannered Russian gymnast. He's also been known to don the odd leotard. This is where the comparison ends if you wish. (And relax)
For Mix Up Rory is joining forces with fellow musician Marc Constantine whose unique electric guitar accompaniment, awash with effects, and delicately tamed with borderline freakish technical wizardry. Constantine's style has been described as the unlikely sound of throwing a Gibson, (Marshall stack and all) over an event horizon and stretched out across the sublime enclave of an emotive audio singularity in which literally anything can spontaneously occur and often does much to the delight of any participating ear that finds itself in local orbit. At least that's the description that shall be used from now on. Perhaps.
In other words one of 'em sings like a girl while playing acoustic and the other plays electric like an alien. Jobs a goodun, if you're into that sort of ting.

THE JOSHUA CAVANAGH-BRIERLEY GROUPA forward-thinking and highly energetic group they perform original compositions that cover a wide range of styles and dynamics. From extremely complex arrangements to minimal, popish melodically-driven compositions, the Nonet draws on a broad spectrum of influences and is unfettered in its creativity. The group is bursting with exciting individuals, inspiring one another to push themselves further in each performance. The Band : Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley, Alan Taylor, Craig Hanson, Danny Wellens, Jake Fletcher, Gavin Hibberd, Sam Healey, Kyran Matthews and Anthony Brown.THE RETROSETTESThe Retrosettes have been split into 2 bands playing at venues, festivals and events for around 5 years. They have a sound that merges classic Jazz, Soul and Funk with modern Pop and Indie. More recently they have merged the two bands into a quintet with includes the singers from both of the bands: Helen Rodgers and Paul Bytheway.
Their original material still has a timeless sound and draws from the same influences of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Its now like Sly and The Family Stone meets The Rolling Stones. With 3 part harmonies (with the 3rd from drummer Rick Weedon), gritty organ and Rhodes solos from Andrzej Baranek and funky bass lines from Hugo 'Harry' Harrison, the sound of the Retrosettes is complete.
The band goes into the studio next month to record their first EP.
ZACC ROGERS
Zacc Rogers plays the sounds of covers & originals, Soul, Jazz, Yee-Haa, Rock & Roll, Gospel, Folk, Blues and Reggae. Since settling in Manchester Zacc has established himself as a strong solo performer gigging frequently up and down the country and in venues across the north west. Zacc is one of the biggest names on the street performing roll call in Manchester.

SHYFINGERHaving been musicians for quite some time, the members of Shyfinger came together, desperate to have a band with an interesting name. All the good names were taken.ALL OF THEM.But this did not deter the plucky crew of instrument manglers, bashers and blowers. Oh no. It made them more RESOLUTE. And thus, they did put together bits of funky riffing, and jazzy noodling, and some of that “head-nod shit,” leaving out the face melting solos so beloved of musos everywhere, and verily it became a set.And oh, they did practice.
And they did write.
And they did drink tea, of varying strength and exotic flavourings.
And they were happy for now they have a band to which you can listen.
Good luck, and godspeed!
BIMBLE BROTHERS
A pair of likely Lancashire lads, The Bimble Brothers travel the world through music and song.
They are writers, composers, song collectors and multi-instrumentalists. Their music is a beguiling blend of original material inspired by traditional melody, and traditional song inspired by modern rhythms.
They play tunes dear to their hearts. It doesn’t matter what genre or style, if a song makes a Bimble smile they’ll play it, if it makes them cry, they’ll play it twice. The Bimbles love to entertain; they are, in fact, just good old song and dance boys.
Their songs are often about their time spent bimbling around the world, falling out, falling in love, drinking too much and not drinking enough.
Formed at birth, the Bimble Brothers were destined to perform together until the end of their joyful days.
Their favourite food is raw liver butties.
One definition of bimble:
‘To bimble is to walk or travel at a leisurely pace.’ – The Guardian (Lancaster)
Influenced by genres: Folk, Bluegrass, Blues, Jazz, Shanty...etc...
LORI CAMPBELL
Lori Campbell's sound is a blend of folk, Soul and Jazz. Her influences range from Bert Jansch to Kate Bush taking in a bit of Louis Armstrong along the way. From Sidmouth in Devon but currently based in Bristol, Lori has just released her debut EP seeds which is available through her website - www.loricampbellmusic.com
If you haven’t seen this freckled folk singer weave her magic on her pint sized guitar before, then you must. Rain or shine, mud or grass this is a pick me up of a show that you simply mustn’t miss.
Lori Campbell oozes charm, she's a comedic sweetheart and sings smooth and lilting as all hell. Armed with a pint sized guitar, uke and supreme mouth trumpet skills, Lori will literally knock your socks off. - Nuala Honan - Live in the Lions Den

MIX UP AFROBEAT ORCHESTRAThose of you who made it to Mix Up's 1st birthday back in 2012 will remember this band. Formed especially for that event we've decided to reform for tonight's party. The Magic Hat Ensemble will be taking to the stage joined by many musical friends to recreate some of their favourite afrobeat tunes. Expect a large, groovy afrofunk session!GYPSIES OF BOHEMIAGypsies of Bohemia formed when lead guitairst and band leader Jim Wallace met rhythm guitarist and ex Whiskeycats vocalist Matthew Whitaker in 2003. Inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt the pair began to explore both the traditional and modern gypsy repertoire and performed regularly together as a guitar duo for over 2 years. It was upon the arrival of double bassist Fran Grime and their first explorations into arranging and writing together that the group really began to take shape.
PADDY STEER
Paddy is a Zelig-like character along the timeline of Manchester's musical activity. It's a testament to his musicality that he has played with such a wide range of music and artists over the years, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian guitarist etc. or all these roles at the same time.
Paddy’s attic studio is like the magic workshop – not only does he make music in there, but he also makes instruments, mends junk, films animations and constructs robots.
Never one to blow his own trumpet, Paddy quietly gets on with developing his craft. There is something of the fairy-tale cobbler working late into the night in order to make the finest shoes in the kingdom, or maybe the musical elves strike up while he's in bed.
It’s a sometime cartoon-like music dense with events, new textures and the colours of children’s paintings, sounds like a Swiss cuckoo clock made of egg boxes and horsehair, glued together by an African Moog player in a Vietnamese iron monger's shop.

WAGON TRAINFormed in 2009 to record and play live Steve's original music which was initially influenced by the Spaghetti Western sountracks of Ennio Morricone alongside a jazz sensibility, the band grew to be influenced by other genres such as dustbowl country music, psychedelia, rockabilly and blues. Most recently, their music was used on the docu-film 'The last shop standing' and in July, the band sold out their gig at the Manchester Jazz festival. Wagon Train are about to embark on a fresh run of gigs coming up over the next few months and a new batch of recordings.Steven Billy Buckley - Guitars, Lap SteelMatt Owens - Double BassEryl Roberts - Drums & percussionJohn Ellis - piano, organKIRSTY MCGEE & THE HOBOPOP COLLECTIVE
The literate, cinematic style of songwriter Kirsty McGee’s music combines wry observation with a grainy old-time black-and-white feel reminding us of auteurs like Jim Jarmusch or the Coen Brothers.
Her seven studio albums have earned her critical acclaim, national airplay & well over a decade of solid touring. Her song Sandman was chosen by Danny Boyle as a cornerstone for his 2013 thriller Trance. McGee defines hobopop – a noun she has used to describe her music - as “music of no fixed genre”. Her choice of left-field musical misfits for her ever-changing band The Hobopop Collective reflects that vagrant spirit. The band's new album Those Old Demons showcases a cross-section of top players whose musical credits range from Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits to Aim and Richard Hawley. Unified by a sense of joyous mischief, the Collective steer a clapped-out Model T through a junkyard of dirty blues, cubist shuffle, neo-jazz and wry noir. A joyful and irreverent melĂ©e of devil-songs, the enjoyment in which it is impossible to miss.
This is the first studio album from the band since their award winning No.5 [A Live Album] in 2009. As this is the band's Manchester launch, expect a big celebration and the biggest manifestation of Collective members since 2009.
THE WEAVE
The Weave is a collection of some of Liverpool's best established Jazz musicians, bringing together an extremely wide range of influences and musical experience to create a repertoire of warm, melodic and joyous homespun originals.

Their album has recieved widespread critical acclaim both nationally and internationally with glowing reviews from top New York critics Mark Myers and Howard Mandel, and has won radio support from the likes of Mark Radcliffe, Jazz FM, UK Jazz Radio.

ROLLER TRIO
Roller Trio burst out of the Leeds scene into the wider jazz world with their 2012 debut self-titled album 'Roller Trio' on the F-IRE Collective label which had people as diverse as Gilles Peterson (BBC6 Music), Radio 3 (Jazz on Three) and John Fordham (The Guardian) raving about it and the band. That same year, the release was nominated for a prestigious Mercury Prize for album of the year. Mixing up jazz improvisation, electronics, global beats and rock energy, the young band caused a real fuss in the music scene and were soon appearing live at clubs and festivals at home and abroad. With musical references as diverse as Anthony Braxton, Soundgarden, Tim Berne, J Dilla and Flying Lotus, they brought a fresh flavour to the UK jazz scene.
The trio are James Mainwairing (tenor sax, electronics), Luke Wynter (guitar) and Luke Reddin-Williams (drums). The last two years have been spent gigging plus writing/recording material for their much anticipated second album which is due this Autumn on the Naim label.
"Dark, menacing, bass heavy - the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz!" - Gilles Peterson BBC 6 Music
"Each piece evolves intriguingly - raw noises swap with cool melodies; glowering, Spanish-sounding pieces unleash tenor sax whirls; blurting stop-start motifs ease in and out of swing grooves." - The Guardian ****
"Sidesteps every pigeonhole, milling rock back beats, Indian flavoured harmonies and film noir paceiness...a gleeful pleasure." - Daily Telegraph
ALABASTER DE PLUME
The poet and saxophonist celebrates creativity in his accompanists, and juggles jaggedly contrasting moods and sentiments. With expansive five-note-scale movements aimed at embellishment, dramatic music is punctuated by candid observations delivered with a sardonic wit.
He is joined by Paddy Steer (percussion, bells, lap steel), John Ellis (keys), and Ben Cashell (cello). Paddy and John produced and performed on Alabaster's debut 'Copernicus' in 2012 in Manchester.
“Harrowingly funny” – Citylife Manchester
"Quite unlike anything you'll have heard before" - Bristol Post
“A slinky, kaleidostropic maelstrom” – Now Then magazine Manchester
“I had to keep laughing, or I think my heart would’ve exploded.” – audience member
PAUL BYTHEWAY
Paul Bytheway is a multi instrumentalist and vocalist originally from the Midlands but now living in Manchester. He is known for fronting soul, funk and jazz bands but in this offering is playing solo. In his solo performances he uses looping technology whilst playing synths, guitar, cajon and singing to create soulful and distinctively original songs. His influences span across the doo wop, pop, funk and ska genres, so expect a sound that merges classic harmonies with modern electronica and traditional blues.

STUART MCCALLUM
Best known for his work with
Cinematic Orchestra, guiatirst Stuart McCallum has teamed up with a
Manchester tour-de-force - Rioghnach Connolly on vocals, Jason Singh on
beatbox and Luke Flowers on drums. Expect beautiful, ballsy vocals from
Rioghnach, soundscapes and electronica from Jason, and epic beats from Luke.
DAVIES / HALSALL / MODI TRIO
Matthew Halsall trumpet/samplers/effects
Taz Modi keyboards/synth bass
Matt Davies drums/samplers
Manchester based trumpeter Matthew Halsall is one of the UK’s brightest
talents, whose love of the transcendental spiritual and modal jazz of
Alice and John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, as well as more
contemporary dance music and electronica has won him fans from Gilles
Peterson to MOJO Magazine.
Influenced by the likes of The
Cinematic Orchestra, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Portico Quartet and Erik
Truffaz, Halsall’s new project is a collaboration with keyboardist Taz
Modi (of Submotion Orchestra) and drummer Matt Davies (of Paper Tiger).
The three musicians combine blissful, hypnotic chords and melodies with
warped new territories as they explore sonic textures to augment the
classic live trio sound. Each player uses a variety of electronic
effects to broaden their range, drawing on spiritual jazz and ambient
electronica to create an otherworldly and beautiful sound.
SAM HEALEY QUARTET
Featuring Stuart McCallum and Luke Flowers of Cinematic Orchestra on Guitar
and Drums respectively + the softly swift fingers of Richard Hammond on the Bass.
This is the very first outing for the ensemble from Beats N Pieces saxophonist, Sam Healey.
With all the music written over the past year, you'll hear the sound of Long flowing melodies, broken
beats, spiritual hefty sounds and joyous grooves all made in aid of a good vibe.
The Quartet aligns arranged melodies and improvisation on an expanse of juicy harmonies
and scintillating beats to exploit the sounds and strengths of each member of the band as
well as bringing them together to create a special atmosphere of delicate feels, beautiful
soundscapes and deep moments to nod and contemplate.
