MIX-UP 04.09.14: ROLLER TRIO - ALABASTER DE PLUME - PAUL BYTHEWAY

ROLLER TRIO

Roller Trio burst out of the Leeds scene into the wider jazz world with their 2012 debut self-titled album 'Roller Trio' on the F-IRE Collective label which had people as diverse as Gilles Peterson (BBC6 Music), Radio 3 (Jazz on Three) and John Fordham (The Guardian) raving about it and the band. That same year, the release was nominated for a prestigious Mercury Prize for album of the year. Mixing up jazz improvisation, electronics, global beats and rock energy, the young band caused a real fuss in the music scene and were soon appearing live at clubs and festivals at home and abroad. With musical references as diverse as Anthony Braxton, Soundgarden, Tim Berne, J Dilla and Flying Lotus, they brought a fresh flavour to the UK jazz scene.

The trio are James Mainwairing (tenor sax, electronics), Luke Wynter (guitar) and Luke Reddin-Williams (drums). The last two years have been spent gigging plus writing/recording material for their much anticipated second album which is due this Autumn on the Naim label.

"Dark, menacing, bass heavy - the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz!" - Gilles Peterson BBC 6 Music

"Each piece evolves intriguingly - raw noises swap with cool melodies; glowering, Spanish-sounding pieces unleash tenor sax whirls; blurting stop-start motifs ease in and out of swing grooves." - The Guardian ****

"Sidesteps every pigeonhole, milling rock back beats, Indian flavoured harmonies and film noir paceiness...a gleeful pleasure." - Daily Telegraph

ALABASTER DE PLUME

The poet and saxophonist celebrates creativity in his accompanists, and juggles jaggedly contrasting moods and sentiments. With expansive five-note-scale movements aimed at embellishment, dramatic music is punctuated by candid observations delivered with a sardonic wit.

He is joined by Paddy Steer (percussion, bells, lap steel), John Ellis (keys), and Ben Cashell (cello). Paddy and John produced and performed on Alabaster's debut 'Copernicus' in 2012 in Manchester.

“Harrowingly funny” – Citylife Manchester
"Quite unlike anything you'll have heard before" - Bristol Post
“A slinky, kaleidostropic maelstrom” – Now Then magazine Manchester
“I had to keep laughing, or I think my heart would’ve exploded.” – audience member

PAUL BYTHEWAY

Paul Bytheway is a multi instrumentalist and vocalist originally from the Midlands but now living in Manchester. He is known for fronting soul, funk and jazz bands but in this offering is playing solo. In his solo performances he uses looping technology whilst playing synths, guitar, cajon and singing to create soulful and distinctively original songs. His influences span across the doo wop, pop, funk and ska genres, so expect a sound that merges classic harmonies with modern electronica and traditional blues.
